There's this model named Roxanne. She's young and gorgeous. She's thin but she's got some curves that she seems to be slightly uncomfortable about, like belly rolls, etc. She always chooses to do these really graceful, elegant, feminine poses. This all makes me want to emphasize her insecurities by drawing her disproportionately, exaggerating her hourglass figure by giving her huge thighs, fat feet, etc. I'm not trying to make fun; like Fernando Botero, I think the large shapes beautify her all the more.

I love drawing the human figure from life. Working in a sketchbook with a ballpoint pen (I love the fine point RSVP pens) is a personal and intimate experience - it's like taking a picture with your mind, carried out through your pen. Later, I redrew it onto regular computer paper and played with my Prismacolor pencils. The smooth surface of the paper works really well for the pencils, making them look more like markers or washes.

I'm always feeling that I'm doing something wrong so I feel sad or upset, lost and confused. But there's always someone there to tell me that it's okay. And ducks and dragonflies swim/fly around in peace and harmony and all is right with the world.

This model was intense. He had tattoos and piercings all over his body, including the penis (both tattoos AND ring!), and posed with props in really dramatic gestures. I had a crazy time trying to get the body looking right as well as getting in all the tattoos. I put priority on tattoos over body, though.

I thought this one was kinda good, but the prof never singled it out as special from my sketchbook.

I drew the top girl in the pink dress with the sunset and beach/mountain landscape while at Viento y Agua because I wield the mighty power of the pen and can draw whatever I want. I don't know, people. Why not. Then I drew the blue girl in the yellow dress for the same reason. Why blue? Because I did not have 'skin color' pencils and figured blue is just a good a skin color as any. And then I drew Amy Winehouse because I am completely fascinated by everything about her. She is my ideal Barbie. So I dressed her in the cute reddish pink dress and had her walk across a Korean gate. WHY NOT.

The background of the traditional Asian landscape is 'wood - where it comes from' and the foreground of the colorful nubile young girl is 'what it's made into'. In other words, it's the old with the new. The past traditions being the foundation for what is current and popular now.

I get pretty bad back pain every once in a while due to menstrual cramps. I look like a crippled old lady, or at least I feel like one. I have been suffering all week due to these debilitating back strains and after a 60 minute Thai massage and a couple Excedrin Extra Strength pills, I feel like a human being again. I LOVE PILLS.

This is a drawing I did for our still life project, although it really isn't so much of a still life since it's completely made up and I'm not too proud of it because there are a lot of incorrect, sloppy elipses. But it has Hello Kitty in it (whose outfit I totally made up as well; I don't know if there's a fairy Hello Kitty around or not) and that makes up for everything.

I had an intermediate drawing class assignment to draw a halved log. The homework was to make up the other half of the log so that we have a drawing of...a log. (cue pathetic WAH WAH WAH music here) Well, this is a 6 ft drawing and I couldn't take one picture of the entire thing, so I just took one of the left side and one of the right side of the drawing. I bought the entire collection of Peter Rabbit books over the weekend and the inspiration is obvious.

This was our final illustration project - fairy tale illustrations of the beginning, middle, and end. I chose to do my version of Beauty and the Beast. It begins with Beauty, a beautiful innocent girl who is sold into marriage by her father. Beast is her husband, an older man. The marriage is consumated. It ends as the real story ends, with Beauty having kids and living out her days as jaded a wife and mother.

Tae-hoon Kim made this ceramic wall piece. It has the Korean vowels and consonants that I drilled through when I learned the language as a child. It's kinda like the ABC song. I love this piece because it's so adorable and reminds me of my childhood of those dreaded Saturday morning Korean schools, but with a positive outlook. I'm going to put this in my future nursury.

This is a cup and saucer made by Craig Clifford. I never thought of cups and saucers to be anything other than purely functional objects until I took ceramics in college.

These ceramic flowers were made by Jesse Potts. He sprinkled them with the stuff that's on the freeway roads to make them reflect light and sparkle. The bottom image is taken with a flash. They sit on my piano top along with some childhood photos in really tacky frames.

Sunday Modeling Session

So I walk in one Sunday modeling session and find that the model is a 50 year old dwarf. Awesome! She was really cool and talked throughout the session about her life, what it's like being a dwarf with her particular disorder, all the different kinds of people she's met throughout her life because of her body, etc. KJAZZ was on the radio and she talked about her singing days.

A Semester's Worth of Beginning Metals & Jewelry

Copper and brass squid necklace. My favorite thing I made all semester.

Copper tea candleholder.

I'm having trouble getting a good close up shot of the rings, but they are two silver rings. Each ring has a teeth design, one is frosty white and the other is dark silver. They're intended to be couple rings and are my weirdo way of being linked together in the idea of a set of teeth. The photo above is a small copper and brass jewelry box with a sun lid. It's your call whether the sun is smiling or frowning. I made the sun box when I was particularly pissed off and extremely stressed out and forced myself to make something cheerful by making something cute and happy, but the sun's feelings came out a bit ambiguous.

The insect candleholder was our first project. We all had a 4 x 4 inch sheet of copper to make either a bracelet or a small sculpture by cutting a design without actually cutting anything out. So if I'd unfold the square of copper down it would go back to being a perfect square sheet of copper with no holes in it. I like to make utilitarian things so went with a candleholder. This project was to practice sawing into metal.

The second project was to make a silver band ring. It was for practice in working with silver, forming a ring, and soldering - a hot connection. I thought the project was pretty stupid because how exciting can a band ring be, but I like the idea I came up with. I messed up with the sizing of my ring though, so it's too small for me to wear.

The third project was to make a pendant dealing with the theme of addiction. The purpose for this project was to practice riveting - a cold connection. By now, I was pretty fed up with this class and its assignments, so I decided to just make whatever I want. I really wanted to make a squid necklace so I did, and pulled a story about sex addiction out of my ass to fit the creative theme criteria.

The fourth and final project was to create a hollow form dealing with the theme of domesticity. This last project had to be made in a short period of time so it was rushed, I was in a bad mood, and wanted something cute for my house, and since this was a jewelry making class, went for a jewelry box.

Quick watercolor study of the CSULB campus landscape. This is looking at the FO3 building, I believe. I need to work on my drawing skills and avoid losing my edges and getting too mushy. I really just have fun and go crazy with color.

Illustration Project #2

Assignment: Create a 20" standing human figure horizontally sectioned off into 4 or 5 parts incorporating different artistic styles from the following:

1) Comic Book
2) Art Deco
3) Art Nouveau
4) Japanese Woodblock Print
5) German Expressionism
6) Surrealism

So out of those 6, I chose 4 styles and incorporated them into my character. The face and hair are Art Nouveau, the arms have Japanese woodblock print tattoos, the body is wearing a 1920s Art Deco style bathing suit, and the feet turn Surreal.

(ps. I know, I know, I should really learn how to take better photos. Anyone wanna help me?)

I worked as a studio assistant for a couple weeks for Peter Morgan (http://www.petergmorgan.com/) in August 2007, and in return for my services, he gave me three gifts: a signature PM wildlife landscape featuring a skunk, a set of PM prints, and a sweet ceramic Christmas tree. He taught me a lot about glaze technique and life in general. A very wise man who never ceases to amaze/amuse me.
